Figs are literally the fruit of the Gods – the Greek god Apollo routinely feasted on them, the prophet Muhammad insisted they were a fruit sent from paradise, and India made the fig their national tree. They are versatile and can be eaten fresh, dried, roasted, stewed, preserved, added to salads or soaked in liqueur and served over yoghurt or ice-cream. Figs are in season right now so add a few in your shopping basket.
